Back at IFA 2016, Lenovo unveiled the latest member of the Moto Z family: Moto Z Play. This handset is essentially a slimmed down version of the standard Z with a slower chipset, less resolution, and less RAM, however a bigger battery and headphone jack were included in the Play’s package over the Z and even Z Force’s smaller cells and lack of 3.5mm ports. Unfortunately, this phone immediately became a Verizon exclusive known as the Moto Z Play DROID, however Moto has now announced that preorders are currently live for the handset completely GSM unlocked.
Carriers such as AT&T and T-Mobile can be used with the Z Play in this unlocked state, while $449.99 is the price of the handset. By no means is this an expensive smartphone when compared to the $700+ models on the market that probably don’t even offer as much as the Play does. And even though I haven’t yet gotten a chance to check this device out in person, I’m totally confident this is probably one of the best bang-for-your-buck solutions judging solely on the on-paper specs and recent reviews that have emerged.
A perk you get when preordering the Z Play unlocked is one that should be around for anyone who picks up any Moto Z: a free Moto Mod. Yes, if you pick up the Play for $449.99, you can get either an Incipio offGRID power pack or JBL SoundBoost Speaker totally for free. Personally, since the battery inside the Play’s so big, I’d go for the speaker since extra power isn’t really necessary, but that’s your decision to make.
The current estimated delivery date of the Moto Z Play is October 27th, so expect this to be the same date when the handset will go fully on sale unlocked. If you’d like to preorder your Moto Z Play unlocked, click here.
