Apple is holding an event on Wednesday, September 12th, where the company is expected to unveil a good list of new products that will launch later this month. While the company hasn’t confirmed anything thus far, plenty of leaks have surfaced on the World Wide Web detailing what the Cupertino giant has in store. If you’re curious to know what to expect from the event, here’s a rundown.
Three new iPhones
A rumor since some time last year, Apple is said to introduce three new iPhone models this year. Two will feature OLED screens measuring in at 5.8-inches and 6.5-inches, while a lower-cost option will feature a 6.1-inch LCD screen. Both the OLED models will succeed last year’s iPhone X, whereas the 6.1-inch unit is expected to replace the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.
Luckily, the mysterious 6.1-inch model won’t adopt the same iPhone 6 design we’ve had since 2014. In fact, leaks suggest Apple will adopt the X’s design for the lower-cost option with a glass front and back, aluminum rails on the sides, and no bezels surrounding the 19.5:9 screen. Of course, the device will also ship with a notch, Face ID support, and Apple’s presumed A12 processor.
The new OLED iPhones should be extremely similar to the LCD variant. They’ll boast similar designs but with stainless steel rails, edge-to-edge screens, Face ID, A12 processors, and notches. We’re also expecting the new OLED models to include 3D Touch, dual cameras on the back, more RAM, and larger batteries, features the 6.1-inch model will reportedly lack.
For names, it’s been said Apple will go with “iPhone Xs” for the new 5.8-inch model and iPhone Xs “Plus” or “Max” for the 6.5-inch variant. Meanwhile, the 6.1-inch LCD variant could be called the “iPhone XC” or “iPhone 9.” I’m personally leaning towards the latter, but I could be wrong.
In addition, rumors suggest the new 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will start at $699 or $799, while the 5.8-inch model will be priced at $899. The 6.5-inch model will start at $999, the same price as the existing iPhone X. All three models should land later this month, although the iPhone 9 might be delayed until October or November, according to reports.
Apple Watch Series 4
Usually, with new iPhones come new Apple Watches, and this year looks to be no different. Apple is said to introduce the new Apple Watch Series 4 at this week’s event and while its design won’t be changing all that much (existing bands are even said to be supported), the screen will be getting an upgrade. In fact, the display will be expanded to the edges of the Series 4 and will eliminate as much bezel as possible. This will allow users to see more information at once on their wrist.
Not much else is known about the upcoming Series 4, but we can confidently predict the watch will also come with LTE support and watchOS 5 onboard. Pricing and availability isn’t current known, but stay tuned.
Updated Software
As is the case with every event Apple holds in September, we expect the company to announce release dates for its upgraded software that originally debuted back at WWDC in June. The software in question is iOS 12, macOS Mojave, watchOS 5, and tvOS 12. All four will come as free upgrades for existing users and should begin rolling out around the time the new iPhones go on sale.
AirPower (Finally)
Last year, Apple introduced AirPower as a multi-device wireless charging station for your iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods. For whatever reason, the company has yet to launch the accessory, but during this week’s event, we expect to hear release and pricing information from Apple. We’ll let you know if this rules out to be true.
New AirPods
Rumors are also pointing to Apple releasing a new set of AirPods at this year’s September event. Not a ton is known about the new wireless earbuds, but rumors suggest a new chipset similar to the W1 along with hands-free Siri activation. The new AirPods will also likely come with a wireless charging case for compatibility with AirPower.
While that’s everything we expect to hear from Apple on Wednesday, we could also see a few surprises from the company, although it doesn’t seem likely. Still, if the company does surprise us with something, it probably won’t be a new MacBook or iPad since they’re rumored to arrive next month. Of course, stay tuned to Matridox for all the latest news from the keynote.
