If you hate changing passwords, today’s not your day.
Twitter has announced the existence of a bug that exposed users’ passwords in plain text. It’s unclear who this information is visible to or how many users’ passwords were exposed. As a precautionary measure, the company is urging users to change their passwords so nothing happens to their accounts.
According to Twitter, the error is due to a bug during a process called hashing. Basically, hashing will disguise your password in random numbers and letters and store them in internal logs. Due to the bug, passwords were stored in plain text, therefore revealing the log-ins of likely various users’ passwords. Admittedly, Twitter says they haven’t found evidence of false play by a hacker so they’re kind of clueless as to why this happened.
Still, if you fear your password was revealed, your best bet is to go and change it immediately. We’ll let you know of any further information.
