The Vivo Nex Looks Like the Future of the Smartphone

Vivo has unveiled a new smartphone that takes the whole “no bezel” thing for real (Lenovo!). Called the Nex, the device comes with an edge-to-edge 6.6-inch 1080p+ display with a screen-to-body ratio of 91.24 percent. Admittedly, there is a slight chin at the bottom, but that factor’s pretty forgivable once you consider there isn’t a notch housing the front camera and earpiece.

In fact, not having a notch is sort of the statement piece of the Nex. Whereas many Android devices nowadays are using notches to stretch their displays even farther, Vivo was able to design their handset with a display that stretched all way across the top of its body while retaining a selfie shooter in an ejectable slider at the top of the phone. I’d also like to point out the fact that there’s a headphone jack in the same location. In other words, the future doesn’t look entirely 3.5mm port-less.

In terms of specs, the Nex comes with a Snapdragon 845 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. A cheaper model of the device will ship with a Snapdragon 710 chipset, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage which, clearly, isn’t too shabby. There’s also a huge 4,000mAh battery, Android Oreo, and dual cameras on the back. And of course, the phone comes with an in-display fingerprint reader for authentication.

If you’re interested in picking one up, you’ll need to be in China as that’s the only market Vivo will sell the Nex in. At least you won’t need to spend all that much, however, since the handset costs just 4,998 yuan (around $780). No launch date was given but expect more news in the near future.
