Huawei’s Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro are increasingly popular devices (we even just gave one away) because of their high quality builds, great performance, fantastic cameras, and excellent battery life. So obviously, the company has its work cut out for them to introduce improved versions of the phones for 2018. According to early rumors, it looks like the company will do just that.
XDA-Developers was able to obtain firmware files from a user on its platform, and they seem to detail exactly what the new Huawei Mate 20 will feature. For starters, there will reportedly be a 6.3-inch AMOLED screen up front with an embedded fingerprint scanner, similar to what’s featured on the Mate RS. It’s unclear whether the display will come with a notch, but if the P20 is any indication, you can expect the cutout at the top of the screen.
As far as under-the-hood specs go, we’ll likely see a new Kirin 980 processor with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage inside the Mate 20. We may also even see wireless charging, a feature the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro lack despite including glass bodies. Additionally, the phone will come with a larger 4,200mAh battery that charges over USB-C. There still won’t be a headphone jack, however.
Interestingly, XDA says the firmware shared with them is based on Android P 9.0, not Android Oreo. This indicates the Mate 20, Mate 20 Lite, and/or Mate 20 Pro will launch with the latest version of the OS out of the box. While it’s definitely nice to see Huawei adopt new software so early on, only time will tell as to how well the software is supported since updates aren’t something the company seems to care about.
There’s a good chance we’ll see the new Mate 20 launch this year during IFA which starts at the end of August. We’ll keep you posted on ay developments in this case until then.
