The Essential Phone is Getting a Magnetic Headphone Dongle with a DAC Inside

Back when Essential had originally introduced the Essential Phone, the company said we would get a range of different magnetic modules to attach to the back of the device that would add additional functionality, similar to how Moto Mods operate. Up until now, though, we’ve only seen the 360 camera come to life. Thankfully, Essential hasn’t given up on the project and has announced a new module that gives users one of the most requested features of the Essential Phone: a headphone jack.

Yup, that’s right folks. The new Audio Adapter HD (as Essential’s calling it) attaches to the back of the Essential Phone and gives you a traditional 3.5mm port for plugging in your favorite set of cans. But this isn’t a standard headphone adapter by any means. It’s actually pretty special…

According to Essential, the module comes with a built-in high-resolution ESS Sabre DAC to drive high-fidelity audio to high-impedance headphones. Essential says the adapter also comes with an “audiophile-grade amp” and is made from machined titanium for durability.

In addition, Essential is also announcing a new partnership with Tidal that will give customers a free three-month trial of the service’s HiFi subscription tier so you can enjoy the new capabilities added to the Phone. You’ll need to make sure you’ve upgraded to Android 8.1 Oreo before streaming any hi-fi audio to get these benefits.

Essential says the new headphone adapter will launch later this summer.
