Tesla Model 3 Is Here, Release Set for 2017, Costs $35,000

Last night, Tesla unveiled what could be the most hyped car of 2016; the Tesla Model 3.  Elon Musk, the CEO of the company, hopes that this vehicle will take electric cars to the masses, and this may happen since it’s price is set to $35,000, something much more affordable than previous Tesla models such as the Model S or Model X which can easily run you $100,000.

The Model 3, according to Musk, can go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. That’s already pretty speedy, however Tesla says faster models will come out alongside this base model. Tesla also wants to exceed the range of the Model 3 which is currently 215 miles.

Fuel-wise, Tesla says all Model 3 cars will support the company’s high-speed Supercharging network since”it’s about going where you want to go,” according to Musk. There’ll be 7200 Superchargers by the end of 2017 (if Tesla keeps their word) which is double of what the current number is.

Rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are both present in the new Model alongside Autopilot hardware which comes standard. All safety features are automatically active so you’re confident you’ll be okay on the road.

Inside, there’s room for 5 adults to sit comfortably — “comfortably is the important part here,” says Musk. There’s also a 15-inch landscape touchscreen for operating things such as the GPS and radio, something lots of customers will love. For reference, there’s a 17-inch portrait touchscreen in the current Model S and X.

Design-wise, we’re looking at one seamless, continuing piece of glass which stretches from the windshield of the car all the way to the trunk. And for storage, there’s both a front and back trunk with so much room that the Model 3 has “more cargo capacity than any gasoline car of the same external dimensions,” according to Musk. And according to The Verge, a 7-foot surfboard could even be stored inside.

By now, you’re probably all like, “Oh my gosh! This is the perfect car for me! I’m gonna go out and buy one in three months when it comes out!” Well, unfortunately Mr/Ms Hyper Customer, you’re gonna have to wait until late 2017 to get your hands on the Model 3. Tesla hopes to be able to expand their current dealership by doubling it alongside their service network to sell and care for their new line of vehicles.

However, Tesla hasn’t totally rained on everyone’s parade. As early as last night, the company began accepting preorders for the Model 3 from anyone who’s willing to put down $1,000 for the car. If you’re interested in doing so, visit Tesla’s website.

The Model 3 will literally decide the fate of Tesla. During last night’s event, Musk thanked all Model S and X buyers for funding the development of the Model 3. And for more than a decade, the company’s been working on this new car, betting billions on it’s success. If this car doesn’t deliver like Tesla hopes, we may have to see the company ride off into the sunset… in their Model 3, because they’ll no doubt have plenty of them lying around.
