Spotify Refreshes Premium App with Updated Navigation, Improved Search, and Better Artist Radio

Spotify has announced a refreshed version of its mobile app for iOS and Android users who are subscribers of the service’s Premium tier. The app doesn’t look completely different from what users are used to seeing at this point, but the refresh does make some notable changes that should improve the experience of using the app as a whole.

For one, Spotify has streamlined its navigation. Now, when you open the app, you’ll find three tabs: Home, Search, and Your Library. This should make finding the content you’re looking for a bit easier.

The second big new feature is personalized search. “Our redesigned Search page is the new one-stop destination for artists, albums, podcasts, and more—whether the subscriber knows what they’re searching for or wants to explore something new,” said the company in a blog post. “At the top of the screen, listeners can find their Top Genres—from indie to country to reggae—and easily discover the music that best reflects them and their mood.”

Finally, Spotify is now also introducing better artist radio stations. Essentially, this means when you play a song or a specific artist’s radio station, you’ll be given a personalized station based on your own musical tastes. The thumbs up/thumbs down functionality will be removed from the player and the app will use the same algorithms used to deliver personalized playlists like Discover Weekly to play music it thinks you’ll like. This should make enjoying music on the platform much more bearable since you won’t have to tell it what you like and what you don’t.

These changes are rolling out to all Spotify Premium subscribers now.
