Skype’s Celebrating Their 10th Anniversary By Giving Us a Gift: Group Video Chat on Mobile

Microsoft’s celebrating the 10th anniversary of Skype, their very popular video chatting service. They’ve announced that there have been nearly two trillion minutes spent video chatting using the service, which they say… is a lot.

Two trillion video minutes sounds like a lot – and it is. In fact, with that amount of time, you can use Skype to read to every child in the world for 10 hours, every family can be together over Skype for more than 7 hours and there’s still time left for the entire world’s workforce to have an hour-long interview via Skype.

To celebrate this milestone, Microsoft has announced that they’ll be updating all of their Skype mobile apps to include group video chat. This is incredible news, as this feature has only been available on desktop for the longest time.

Here’s the company’s official video, explaining everything you need to know about the update:

Please join us as we celebrate ten years of Skype video calling! You are the reason Skype is the video calling app of choice for consumers around the world. You encouraged your friends, family and colleagues to give Skype a try and have changed the way you communicate, generating nearly 2 trillion minutes of free Skype video calls over the last decade, from every corner of the earth.

It’s amazing that Skype has been around for 10 years. Back then, it was PC-only, meaning you couldn’t get it on Mac. I’m not gonna say you couldn’t get it on mobile, because Android and iOS weren’t around back then. But nonetheless, it’s incredible to see just how huge it got and the leaps and bounds it made to get to where it is today. I personally use Skype all the time, and if you’re with me, leave a comment and let me know.

Here’s the official poster to celebrate Skype’s 10th birthday:

Happy Birthday, Skype! We’re looking forward to spending the next 10 years with you and see how much you’ll grow!
