While it may seem pretty obvious that to avoid an explosion, you should only charge your Galaxy Note 7 a little and not all the way to 100% or overnight, Samsung wants to make sure everyone does this by capping the amount of power allowed back into the battery of the 2016 flagship via a software update which will begin rolling out starting September 20th. This upgrade will only allow the 3500mAh battery of the Note 7 to be filled up to 60%. While this is pretty unfortunate as you’ll only have 2100mAh to work with, this update is only for those of you who haven’t sent back your device to Samsung for a replacement. This comes in the thick of a pretty nasty turn of events for Samsung who has received over 70 different reports of their latest smartphone burning up and essentially exploding which has lead to the company having to recall all Note 7 units sold to date.
Word on this new development comes via the Associated Press who released an article today sharing the new information. A Korean newspaper also published the story in today’s issue on the front page which read off this statement from Samsung themselves.
It is a measure to put consumer safety first but we apologize for causing inconvenience.
Other than taking back every single phone that made it on the market and into the hands of consumers, this is likely one of the only ways to prevent more exploding Galaxy Note 7 cases from popping up on Samsung’s desk in the morning. Since the company will give you a free replacement, I recommend just sending your phone back to Sammy rather possibly risking your life, but if you tend to live on the edge a bit, at least upgrade to this new software so nothing will/should happen to you if you have your phone plugged in for a while.
As of now, it’s unclear whether users will have to update their Galaxy Note 7s to this new software or not, but nevertheless I alongside the rest of my team at MBEDDED highly recommend you do so. Obviously, there’s no guarantee that this battery cap will avoid all explosions or overheating, but it should aid the Note 7 in keeping itself a bit cooler.
We’ll bring you more on this new software patch when it begins rolling out next week.
