Samsung’s Galaxy J1 Hits Canada

Samsung’s entry-level smartphone, the Galaxy J1, has hit the market up in Canada and is available at retail stores alongside Samsung Experience Stores. Color options are limited as black is the only one listed, however this phone does fall in the $100-$150 price bracket, but don’t get too excited as there’s plenty of catches…

The Galaxy J1 is sporting a 4.3-inch 800×480 display which is pretty low for a bigger phone of this nature. It’s also got a 1.2GHz Dual-Core Cortex A7 CPU alongside 512MB of RAM packed inside which is more than enough to power that display. You’ll also find a 5MP rear camera with a flash (however don’t expect Galaxy S7 pictures from it) alongside a 2MP selfie cam. You’re also getting 4GB of expandable storage via microSD card, however 4GB is very little (and your bound to only have access to around 1.5GB of that space) so I suggest picking up an SD card with your purchase of this phone.

See what I mean by “plenty of catches”?

Anyway, people are really liking this handset (especially in emerging markets where smartphones aren’t commonly available), and while I still recommend the Moto E 2015 to people who are tight on a budget thanks to it’s sharper display, faster Snapdragon processor, better performance, and near-stock Android Lollipop experience, the Galaxy J1 could very well be the next leader in budget-friendly cell phones.
