Samsung Unveils Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge

Samsung has unveiled the next Galaxy smartphones, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. This time around, the company has decided to go with a similar design to it’s predecessor, the Galaxy S6, design wise. the S7/Edge sports an all medal and glass design with similar curves and “edges” (pun intended) as the S6/Edge. The S7 has a 5.1 inch screen while the S7 Edge has a bigger 5.5 inch screen along with the obvious “edge” screens found on either side of the phone. However they have their differences, both phones sport QHD (2560 x 1440) displays with pixel densities of 575ppi and 534ppi respectively, which make them ideal for use with something like Samsung’s Gear VR headset.

On the inside, Samsung has packed in quite a powerful processor, but it matters where you live. In the US, Japan, and China, the S7/Edge will sport a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 820, while in different markets the phones will get 2.4GHz octa-core Exynos processor. You’ll also see different storage capacities depending on region. 32GB and 64GB models are being launched, but you won’t see both in the same market.

Samsung has decided to give the S7 lineup the ability to accept microSD cards for storage expansion up to an extra 200GB of space, which is quite hefty. And with Android Marshmallow’s new ways to treat expanded storage, you could be lushing over a massive 264GB of internal space, something only found in tech enthusiast’s dreams.

Something Samsung did with the new line of Galaxy smartphones that shocked people around the world was their new rear camera system. This year, the company decided to pack the S7/Edge with a 12MP camera, down 4MP from last year’s GS6/Edge. But however that’s true, the company has explicitly said that this generation Galaxy can shoot much better pictures since Sammy’s BRITECELL technology is on board. Also, the camera this time sits flush to the body, something owners of recent smartphones have been complaining about. The rear camera can also shoot in 4K as expected, and if you were wondering, the front camera is 5MP.

One of the greatest features of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge is the fact that they have an IP68 certification, meaning they are waterproof. Here’s the way Samsung themselves puts it:

You can’t live without water or your smartphone, which is why the Galaxy S7 edge & Galaxy S7 has an IP68 rating. That means it repels spills, splashes and even dunks so you can save the rice for cooking.

Samsung has also packed in wireless charging into the S7 and S7 Edge along with a 3000mAh in the S7 and a hefty 3600mAh battery in the S7 Edge. And however the phones do support quick charge, Samsung has opted for a Micro USB charging solution rather a USB Type-C port for data and refueling.

So by now, you’re probably wondering, “When can I get my hands on one?!?” Well, it’s different with each carrier, but essentially you’ll be able to preorder the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge beginning February 23rd. The phones will officially go on sale on March 11th. The devices will be available in black, gold, wine red and gray/silver.
