Just as reports surface that Apple will be holding off until 2020, Samsung has announced it’ll be releasing a phone next year equipped with 5G compatibility. The device is a result of the company’s partnership with Verizon who will be supplying the 5G connectivity once its network goes live in early 2019. According to today’s announcement, the phone will be released in H1 2019.
“5G will usher in a new era of mobile connectivity, allowing people to connect to data, experiences and other people in ways never thought possible,” said Brian Higgins, VP of wireless device and product marketing at Verizon. “Together, Samsung and Verizon have made huge gains in bringing 5G commercial services to consumers in several cities. Now, we’re partnering to create a smartphone to put the power of 5G in the palm of your hand.”
According to the companies, we’ll be getting our first glimpse at the 5G tech the upcoming Samsung phone will use at this year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit in Maui, Hawaii, in the form of the Snapdragon X50 modem. The modem will be used in a proof-of-concept phone that will be demoed at the event. Currently, we have no details on the actual Samsung phone that will be released in 2019, although it’s been reported previously that a special variant of the upcoming Galaxy S10 will pack 5G compatibility.
