Today’s a sad day for anyone who uses CloudMagic’s Newton mail app. In a blog post over on Medium, CloudMagic CEO Rohit Nadhani has announced Newton will be shut down on September 25th. The app has been around since 2013 when it was originally called CloudMagic. The app served as a way to sync all of your email accounts to your device via one simple email and password. It was a convenience many praised, but now, we’ll be losing it for good.
Here’s a snippet of the blog post that broke the news.
Hello everyone,
It’s with a heavy heart that I share with you the news that Newton app will be shutting down on September 25th, 2018.
The past few years have been an incredible journey for all of us. We launched CloudMagic in 2013, which instantly became one of the breakout email apps across platforms, with love and support from over 4 million users. Later in 2016, we (re)launched a subscription-based premium email app called Newton, and over 40,000 paid subscribers signed up and have been our loyal users since. We want to say a big THANK YOU to all our users. Words cannot express our gratitude for all of you. We are entirely bootstrapped ($0 VC funding), and we couldn’t get here without you, and your love, and support.
According to CloudMagic, the reason Newton is being shut down is due to the lack of a proper business model. The company says it tried many different models but none of them seemed to work. It was also hard to compete with free mail apps from providers like Google, Apple, and Microsoft since Newton began charging users $99/year to use the app.
As for what will happen when Newton shuts down, CloudMagic says it’s working with Apple and Google to get refunds on a pro-rata basis out to those who have already paid for an annual membership. The company also says going forward, it will no longer accept new sign-ups and won’t be renewing anyone’s subscriptions.
Luckily, not everything is going away. CloudMagic says it’ll stick around after Newton shuts down. It’ll work on new projects and ideas in the future. Here’s to them developing an even better email app with a more structured and profitable business model.
If you’ve been following me, you know I rep Newton proudly. It’s truly a shame to see such an interesting, functional, and convenient app go away. I’ve already started sifting through the app store to find a liable replacement and will report back once I have a good recommendation.
In the meantime, R.I.P. Newton. You were good to all of us, my friend. 🍻
