This past year, HP brought us the Elite x3, a device that attempts to promise the functionality of a smartphone, laptop, and PC via the use of multiple accessories we believed had great potential. This device specifically targets business and hard-core power users mainly, while a consumer focus isn’t exactly present even though anyone can buy one. Luckily, for those interested in a Windows 10 Mobile-powered offering from Hewlett-Packard but with an average consumer approach, a new report by Dr. Windows claims an upcoming handset is being developed by HP and is slated for release next year.
While we don’t know the exact name of the smartphone or what its specific specifications are, we do know that it’ll be much more consumer friendly and be powered by a Snapdragon 600 series processor. The exact model of the chip is currently unknown, but the 617 is probably our best guess.
For those who don’t know, a Snapdragon 600 series processor is a major step down from the Elite x3. This smartphone has a Snapdragon 820 onboard, and if you know your chipsets, you know that an 820 is way faster than any 600. Nevertheless, HP isn’t targeting power users here whatsoever. All they seem to want to do is create a device that’s perfect for the average person who likes Windows 10 Mobile and grant them a decent experience, that’s it.
Luckily, those who choose the upcoming HP handset over the company’s Elite x3 won’t be missing out on too much as this smartphone will reportedly also be compatible with the computer giant’s Desk Dock and Microsoft’s Continuum for multitasking on the go and at home. Obviously, with a 600 series chip inside, the experience using either of these utilities will be rather slow (even with an 820, things get rather sluggish sometimes), but at least you’ll have access to it in case you ever need it.
For now, that’s all the information currently available. Of course, with the launch date expected for some time in 2017, we should see more information eventually surface, so stay tuned.
