In November, rumors began swirling about Apple possibly considering entering the eyewear market with a pair of AR-powered glasses. This has been brought back to our attention by Robert Scoble, a technical evangelist who runs the Scobleizer blog. He claims Apple is working together with Carl Zeiss, a German optics company established in 1846, to deliver consumers a pair of augmented reality-infused glasses.
Via an unnamed Zeiss employee, Rober Scoble released this statement:
A Zeiss employee confirmed the rumors that Apple and Carl Zeiss AG are working on a light pair of augmented reality/mixed reality glasses that may be announced this year. (I thought it was next year but now that I saw this I believe it will happen this year).
The exact launch date is still a complete guess, as Robert Scoble has two sources who gave him two different timelines. The most recent guess he had was the glasses could be released this year, although it now looks like a launch in 2018 is more plausible. The 2018 timeframe was corroborated by a source from Bloomberg.
Tim Cook has for a long time showed interest in augmented reality, often praising the technology’s abilities, also suggesting that it has more real-world potential than virtual reality. Tim Cook’s praise of the technology could be a good reason why Apple is moving forward with the project. Nevertheless, nothing’s confirmed unit it is, so stay tuned.
