Qualcomm today unveiled the new Snapdragon 850 processor, built for running inside Always Connected Windows 10 PCs. The chipset is based on the Snapdragon 845 found in many of today’s flagship Android devices but improves upon it to create a more pleasurable experience for Windows 10 users.
According to Qualcomm, the 850 is up to 30 percent faster than the 845 and boasts up to three times better AI performance. The chip includes an X20 1.2 gigabits per second LTE modem to speed up internet connectivity, while improved battery life with up to 25 hours of continuous use is also present. The processor is still built on a 10nm process and packs Kryo 385 CPU cores, an Adreno 630 GPU, and 84-bit architecture. The 850 does see an increase to 2.96GHz, however.
Qualcomm really wants to win at this whole Always Connected PC thing. The company tried to deliver a good, mobile-focused product with some early iterations of the Always Connected PC powered by the Snapdragon 835 earlier this year, but they were met with less than stellar reviews. Hopefully, the 850 performs better than before and provides a more pleasing experience getting work done on Windows 10 on the go.
The company says we can expect the first wave of Snapdragon 850-powered PCs in time for the holidays from OEMs such as Asus, Lenovo, HP, and Samsung.
