An update to Google’s Project Fi, their version of a wireless carrier that’s still in it’s early stages, has added support for certain data-only tablets today. These devices include Nexus 7, Nexus 9, Samsung Galaxy Tab S, iPad Air 2, and iPad Mini 4. There’s no extra fee to add your tablet to your Fi plan, and data is still $10 for every 1GB you use. Customers already signed up for a Fi plan will being to see an option to receive a free data-only SIM card in the “Your Plan” page in your account to place in your celluar-enabled tablet. In theory, any unlocked phone or tablet compatible with T-Mobile should be able to use this SIM card just fine.
It’s pretty weird that Google’s letting non-Android device owners in on Project Fi as the service has been restricted to Google’s own devices such as the Nexus 5X, 6, and 6P. My guess is that they want to attract a bigger crowd and get more people on the bandwagon.
Google also says that you’ll be able to add up to 9 different SIM cards to your plan, while allowing users to move a SIM card amongst devices. Additionally, data-only SIM cards will not support tethering.
