Alongside the ultra-flashy, glammed-up OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus today also unveiled its new OnePlus 7 smartphone. The follow-up to last year’s OnePlus 6T, the phone takes a variety of cues from its predecessor.
For one, the phone looks like a 6T, just a bit smaller. It boasts a similar glass form factor with aluminum rails. There’s a 6.2-inch Optic AMOLED 2340×1080 display on the front which is 0.2-inches smaller than what’s on the 6T. It’ll probably prove to be a fine display, but nothing impressive like the Pro.
Under the hood, you’ll find a Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. OnePlus also says the phone comes with a large 4,150mAh battery which should translate to some pretty sweet battery life. It’s rechargeable over USB-C thanks to the company’s 30W Warp Charge. Unfortunately, there’s still no wireless charging.
On the back, OnePlus is including an all-new 48MP f/1.8 main camera along with a secondary telephoto camera for depth collection. This is a similar setup to what’s on the OnePlus 7 Pro, with the difference being the 7 Pro ships with a third ultra-wide shooter. the standard 7 doesn’t get the privilege, unfortunately. So if you want better landscape shots, you’ll have to upgrade.
On the front, OnePlus includes a 16MP f/2.0 selfie shooter. It stays in a single place permanently, unlike the OnePlus 7 Pro’s lens which uses a motor to reveal itself at the top of the phone.
Rounding things off, the OnePlus 7 comes with Android 9 Pie with OnePlus’ OxygenOS on top.
Overall, the OnePlus 7 isn’t exactly looking to impress anyone. So why should you care about it? Because it’s the cheapest phone OnePlus will offer that’s been updated for 2019. The OnePlus 7 Pro is making its way up to the top tier of phones, and that means costing the same amount as other big-name players like Apple, Samsung, and Google. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 7 will somewhat stick with the company’s original montre of a premium flagship experience for less.
If you’re someone who doesn’t like spending $700+ on a new smartphone, the OnePlus 7 might be the right fit for you. Of course, we’ll have to spend some time with it to see whether it’s actually worth it, but right now, it looks like it could be a pretty solid offering.
The OnePlus 7 will go on sale on May 17th alongside the OnePlus 7 Pro. It’ll retail for 499 euros in the UK. That’s because the phone won’t be sold in the U.S. Instead, the 6T from last year will be offered for $549.
