Now You Can Watch “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” with Sphero’s BB-8

When Sphero announced their BB-8 toy, the entire tech world went nuts over it, wondering just how they made it and what details the little thing possesses alongside if it’s anything like the character in the world famous Star Wars film series. And apparently, he is, and people really like him. Now, fans can have another reason to like this little guy.

The developers behind Sphero’s app for the BB-8 robot have released an updated version of the software which allows the toy to enjoy Star Wars: The Force Awakens with you. By using your phone’s microphones to listen to the audio coming from your TV’s speakers, BB-8 will react to certain points of the movie where the company finds it appropriate. So say there’s a major twist in the movie that you didn’t see coming; BB-8 will hear what’s going on and react very similarly to how you did. You’ll have to have him plugged in during the film in order for the feature to work, however this shouldn’t be a problem for most people.

Your only other requirement besides actually owning a BB-8 toy is having a copy of The Force Awakens, however the film is now widely available across all platforms (DVD, Blu-Ray, digital, etc) and shouldn’t be hard to acquire if you haven’t already. Oh, and if you’re curious, you don’t need a special edition of the movie to enjoy it with BB-8 since it only relies on the audio being transmitted from your media center’s speakers.

I don’t really know where I stand on this update. In one hand, it’s kinda scary to see a robot react just as you did without hearing or seeing you. But on the other hand, this is simply just a gimmick for Star Wars lovers to enjoy a few times before it gets old. I don’t really know whether I’m a fan of the film series as I’ve never seen any of the movies… so I’m gonna end it here before my email gets filled up with messages from angry fans. 🙂
