Back in June when Lenovo unveiled the Moto Z and Z Force, additional Mods, the magnetic attachments that connect to the back of the phones to grant users more controls and capabilities, were promised to be on their way from third parties. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen anything in this category so far as the only four Mods currently available are ones Moto helped develop themselves. However, this is all changing as per a blog post, the sub-company has announced a new partnership with Indiegogo that’ll bring forth fresh ideas for and development of new Moto Mods.
We’re collaborating with Indiegogo, the global platform for entrepreneurs to bring their ideas from concept to market. Now, developers will have the opportunity to raise money to bring their Moto Mods to life.
With the new Moto Mods Development Kit (MDK for short), Moto says they’ll be “allowing people everywhere to contribute to the ecosystem by bringing their own Moto Mods to life.” In other words, if you’ve got an idea for a Mod and want to bring it to life, you can submit it to Moto and they may select you to be a recipient of a free Moto Z and MDK of your own. You’ll also be brought to Chicago to pitch your idea to Lenovo where the company may begin development of the Mod you came up with. If it’s really good, you’ll even stand a chance getting a $1 million investment from the company for further development. You’ll have to really sell it, obviously, but everyone’s got a fair chance.

Alongside all of this goodness, Moto also says they’ll be hosting Moto Mod hackthons for developers to visit New York or San Francisco and “have the opportunity to participate in the Indiegogo campaign.”
Additionally, we’ll be hosting Moto Mods hackathons in the U.S. to inspire developers to bring their ideas to life. The first hackathon will be in New York in December. Anyone who creates Moto Mods during the hackathon will have the opportunity to participate in the Indiegogo campaign as well. A second Moto Mods hackathon will take place in San Francisco in January. All in all, if you’ve got an idea for a Mod, I say submit it. Hey, you’ll only have a chance at a $1 million investment from Lenovo if you do.
