Alongside the PHAB2 Pro, today at their event, Lenovo showed off the latest devices in the Moto family, the Moto Z and Moto Z Force. These devices are some of the thinnest out there, with the standard Z coming in at 5.2 mm and the Z Force at 7 mm. All in all, these handsets pack plenty of heat in ultra-slim all-metal bodies, a first for any Moto device.
What do I mean by heat? Just check out these spec sheets and you’ll see.

As you can see, the Moto Z and Z force share very similar specs in various departments. However, since the Force is 1.8 mm thicker, Lenovo managed to squeeze in a much bigger battery and better camera sensor, so if you’re a sucker for battery life, the Z Force is your best bet.
Interestingly, there isn’t a 3.5mm headphone jack on either the Moto Z or Z Force. It’s unclear just why Lenovo made this decision, however it may be because Apple is rumored to do the same thing with the upcoming iPhone 7. Nonetheless, there’s other ways of listening to your music, with one being over Bluetooth or NFC and the other over the 3.5mm jack to USB-C adapter Lenovo will pack in the box of the Moto Z/Force.
To follow the trend of “modular” smartphones, Lenovo is also announcing new accessories for the Moto Z and Z Force they’re calling Moto Mods. By simply connecting the Mods to the back of your new Moto Z phone via the 16 pin connectors, you can make your screen even bigger via a projector, play your favorite music out of a third-party speaker, or extend your battery by up to 22 hours via a power pack. Yes, yes, you might be able to do this already with other accessories, but the special part about Moto Mods is the fact that when you connect them to your device, they stay on via magnets and don’t add much more bulk to the handset. Here’s how Moto puts it:

We’ve made the connection process super-simple too. High-powered magnets connect Moto Mods to your phone so you can easily snap them together as your needs change. And since function never goes out of style, rest assured that the Moto Mods developed today are designed to work with future generations of Moto Z phones.
For some reason, I get the vibe that Lenovo is trying to make the Moto Z and Z Force “modular”, however that’s not really what’s going on here. Considering how similar these connectors on the rear are to the Smart Connector on the iPad Pro, you might as well consider Apple’s big tablet “modular”. I’m just saying, this isn’t really what a modular smartphone is. It’s great for accessories, but not modules.
If you’re a customization junky, you’ll have to use StyleMods, little skin-type accessories for your Moto Z nd Z Force which attach via magnets to give you a custom look. Various textures and fabrics will be available like real leather or wood. However, you won’t be able to use Moto Maker to create the perfect device as both these devices will stick with predefined colors and looks by Lenovo.
Pricing isn’t available just yet, however the Moto Z and Z Force are currently scheduled to come out this summer as “Droids” exclusively on Verizon. September will be when you can get the devices unlocked and globally.
