During a press event today (via PCMag), Senior Lenovo Vice President and Motorola’s President Aymar de Lencquesaing had a few choice words to share regarding the future of the Moto Z and Moto Mods, the company’s ‘modular’ platform.
In an interview, de Lencquesaing said that Moto will “likely” develop a Moto Mod that grants the Z family Tango capabilities. For those who don’t know, Tango is Google’s augmented reality platform that first made its way to the Lenovo PHAB2 Pro earlier this year.
Here’s exactly what he said.
“The tablet folks [at Lenovo] did a phablet and worked with Google, the Tango team, to come out with a Tango phablet,” he said. “Going forward, we’ll have to address as a group how do we reconcile the products that are at the fringe? We’re likely to to have a Tango module to basically enable the Z to have Tango functionality.”
The PHAB2 Pro features a 6.4-inch display which categorizes the device more as a phablet (phone/tablet) rather just a phone. Normally, people find this size simply too big. Therefore, if Moto develops Tango for a much more manageable 5.5-inch device (in other words, the Z line), many more will likely have access to the technology and the experience will look a bit more pleasing.
As there hasn’t been any information shared about it, we don’t know when this Mod will arrive. Earlier reviewers have said that the Tango platform and apps available still need work as they’re mostly buggy, so it’s likely that Moto will wait for the platform to perfect a bit more before taking another step into the world of AR.
We also don’t know how much it’ll cost. But while past Mods have cost between $99 and $299, we can expect a similar cost.
Via this press event, we’ve received indication that Moto firmly believes in their Moto Mods platform and the Z family as a whole. While the future remains unclear for the modular LG G5, it looks like Moto will continue to support their vision of a modular phone and not put it aside as a failed attempt. We’re a big fan of the Moto Z, so it’s nice to see a phone we like so much not be dropped of the edge of a cliff.
