After much speculation and rumors flying everywhere, it looks like LG has finally taken the wraps off of their latest handset, the G5 SE. It’s unknown if this was a mistake or not, however the way the company unveiled the smartphone was by publishing a page on their Russian website which gave us all the details about the handset. It’s worth noting that I visited that website and tried to find the page for myself, however I was unsuccessful. If you’d like to try, here’s a link, however I have a hunch that LG has taken it down.
The new G5 SE is the little brother to the G5, LG’s previously launched handset that introduced a modular design to the world. The G5 SE carries over the same design and quite a few of its features, however it is a bit lower end than the G5.
First of all, the screen is the same 5.3-inch Quad HD IPS in-cell touch display as the G5 with the same PPI of 554. The phone also runs the latest version of Android (Marshmallow 6.0.1) with LG’s custom UI on top alongside the same 16MP/8MP dual camera system on the rear and 8MP sensor on the front. You’ll also find the same rear-mounted fingerprint sensor/home button and USB-C port alongside it’s 3.5mm headphone jack and speaker system on the bottom.
And while there’s plenty similar between the G5 and G5 SE, there are some differences. For starters, the G5 SE only sports a octa-core 1.8GHz Snapdragon 652 chip opposed to the Snapdragon 820 found in the G5. There’s also 3GB of RAM versus 4GB, and the only storage option is 32GB which is expandable via microSD card by up to 2TB.
This isn’t really a downside of the G5 SE when compared to the regular G5, but if you look at the dimensions chart of the G5 SE and compare it to the G5, you’ll notice that the SE is a bit slimmer, coming in at 7.3mm (versus the G5’s 7.7mm body). Other than that, the phones both sport the same height and width (149.4 x 73.9 mm) and come in the same metallic colors. And theoretically, any case designed for the G5 should also fit the G5 SE without any problems.
For reference, all modules made for the G5, like the CAM Plus physical camera controls or DAC Hi-Fi unit, will work fine with the SE model.
Pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet alongside whether this phone will make it to the States anytime soon, however we’ll keep you updated as more information comes in.
