Today as a part of CES 2017, Lenovo has unveiled a couple of brand new gaming laptops that promise “lean and mean” performance in a portable package. Called the Legion Y520 and Y720, these laptops attempt to defeat the chunkiness of a typical gaming laptop and offer a sleek form factor without sacrificing performance.
Starting with the former, the Legion Y520 features an aluminum-brushed body that weighs 5.3 pounds and measures in at 25.8mm thick. This is by no means the thinnest or lightest laptop on the planet, but it does provide gamers with a more portable package when compared to other gaming laptops on the market.
An optional crimson backlit keyboard is also offered with the Y520 to provide those who game at night or in darker environments a pleasant typing experience. In addition, a 1.7m key travel is also present for better precision.
Regarding specs, Intel’s latest Kaby Lake processors are loaded in alongside up to Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1050 graphics for greater GPU performance, Windows 10 Home, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 2TB of SATA HDD storage, up to 4 hours of battery life thanks to a 45 WHr battery, two custom-tuned Harman speakers alongside DolbyAudio Premium that works with or without headphones, and a 15.6-inch FHD (1920×1080) IPS anti-glare display. There’s also plenty of IO, including a USB 3.1 Type-C port, two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, one HDMI port, an audio jack, a microphone jack, and an SD card reader.
On the other hand, the Legion Y720 steps things up a lot by offering a similar body to the Y520 (with exceptions made for weight at 7.05 pounds and thickness at 29m) but with even better specifications…
For starters, there’s now a 15.6-inch 4K UHD (3840×2160) IPS anti-glare display option which provides an even sharper viewing experience when gaming. This laptop is also the world’s first PC to include Dolby Atmos audio technology, so whether you’re using the built-in JBL speakers or your favorite headset, you should get some pretty great sound from this guy.
In terms of performance, Lenovo has built the Y720 to be VR compatible, so you can connect your favorite virtual reality gear to your laptop and experience everything you’ve seen on every CES video in past years. You’ve also got native Xbox One Wireless Controller support alongside dual metal fans for better cooling while running intense applications and games.
Internal wise, Lenovo packs in up to Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics and up to 5 hours of battery thanks to an upgraded 60 WHr battery. You also get three USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, a USB-C Thunderbolt port, an audio jack, a microphone jack, and a DisplayPort but minus the SD card reader. Regarding other specs, they’re identical to the Y520.
All in all, these new gaming laptops look to be great options for those who are in the world of portable gaming. But while looks on paper can seem promising, only real world testing will determine whether Lenovo’s new Legion line can hold up to other competitors on the market because in reality, one of the few things the Y520 and Y720 have going for them are their thickness and weight.
The Legion Y520 starts at $899.99 and will be available starting next month. The Legion Y720 starts at $1399.99 and will be available for purchase beginning in April. Both models are available in one color: black.
Sounds fun.
