Update: Thanks to a reader on Google+ by the name of Barry Sprit, we have been provided with more screenshots of Instagram’s new UI they are currently testing. The images were taken on a tablet with a 1024×768 resolution, something a bit bizarre for a beta version of an app which is stubborn when it comes to tablet optimization of any kind.
Nonetheless, now we can get a clearer picture at exactly what the new design will look like. We also get to see for the first time what the new picture-taking function appears as. Opposed to the darker gray color currently found, a new white bar with a circle in the middle acts as the shutter button, while the options to upload a previously captured image or video remain in their appropriate positions, however are designed better to reflect the changes made to the shutter.
Instagram has always been a stickler for being old fashion, with its name coming from the words “instant” (a term used by marketers to promote snappy camera back in the day) and “telegram” alongside its not-so-modern design language. However, this all may be changing. Not the name, of course, but the design language.
A reader over at The Verge by the name of Anton Abramov reported that a new design for Instagram could be found on his iPhone. This new UI uses a much more modern black and white language while also replacing some icons with fresh ones, ultimately making the experience in the app better.
According to the screenshots above, a simpler UI may be coming to the app. Transparency seems to be touched on in the upcoming design alongside a new camera icon and notification button. It’s unclear whether these changes will go mainstream or not. An Instagram spokesperson sent a statement over to The Verge and said that these changes are usually just a test.
“We often test new experiences with a small percentage of the global community,” an Instagram spokesman told The Verge. “This is a design test only.”
Nonetheless, I think this UI would be more pleased over the current one. With its boxy look and cluttery way of navigating, it may seem that this new design may never come soon enough for some. Oh, and I’m one of those “some”.
