ICYMI, Samsung is Rolling Out Jauary Security Updates to Their “Major Flagship Models”

In case you missed it, Samsung has begun to roll out their security update for January to their “major flagship models”. It’s unclear exactly what is getting the new fixes, but we can assure you, the GS6/Edge/Plus and Note 5 are getting it.

This update includes all 12 patches released as part of this month’s Android Security Bulletin, which was first released at the beginning of the month when Google’s Nexus devices received the updateAdditionally, this update also includes seven vulnerabilities and exposures specific to Samsung devices that range from low to critical. They apply to devices running KitKat and Lollipop.

Secuirty updates take a while to build and test to assure they run properly on the devices they’re targeting, which would be the reason we’re seeing this security patch arrive to Samsung’s devices so late in the month. For instance, OEMs were notified of January’s issues on December 7th of last year, so you can just see the time frame between now and then as part of preparation for the release.
