As somewhat of a surprise today, Huawei has formally announced the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro won’t be coming to the United States. A company representative told Business Insider they “are not planning to sell the Mate 20 Series in the US.”
A spokesman told Business Insider on Monday: “We are not planning to sell the Mate 20 Series in the US. While international variants of the Mate 20 Series may be available on some US online retail sites, we encourage individuals to carefully read the details about the warranty and network compatibility before purchasing.”
Notably, Huawei says international variants may be sold through U.S. online retailers. Because of this, the company states users will need to check with their carrier to see if the device supported by their network.
There’s a pretty good chance Huawei’s decision not to bring the Mate 20 series to the States is due to the U.S. government basically denouncing the company. The government has famously stated U.S. residents should not buy products from Huawei. This had to have an effect on the company’s decision to not bring the device to the U.S. at all. Huawei has also had regulatory issues in the past which could also be blocking the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro coming to the Land of the Free.
Still, whichever way you look at it, the Mate 20 series not coming to the U.S. of A. really blows. It definitely has the potential to compete with some of this year’s flagship devices including the iPhone XS, Google Pixel 3, and Samsung Galaxy Note 9. But, unfortunately, U.S. residents won’t ever have a chance to buy one unless they do something like import one.
