Google has released an update to YouTube that adds HDR video playback to the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X. Previously, the feature made its way to those with a Samsung Galaxy S8, S8 Plus, Note 8, LG V30, Google Pixel, or the Sony Xperia smartphone. Now, those on the iOS side can enjoy the same benefits of richer colors, better contrasts, and inkier blacks.
To enable HDR playback, load up an HDR-capable video on YouTube and tap the triple-dot menu within the player. From there, choose a viewing option that includes the acronym “HDR.” Obviously, we recommend streaming in 1080p60 HDR since this will get you the best picture possible. But if you have a smaller iPhone 8, the 720p60 HDR option should suffice as well.
The updated version of YouTube is rolling out to all iOS users now.
