To the disappointment of many, Google has confirmed in an interview with Tom’s Guide that it isn’t planning to release its own smartwatch any time soon. The company says its focus is on its partners for the time being. Both Google engineering director Miles Barr and a PR representative at the search giant confirmed this to the publication.
Miles Barr, Google’s director of engineering for Wear OS, said Friday during an interview that Google has no plans to release a smartwatch this year.
“To think of a one-size-fits-all watch, I don’t think we’re there yet,” Barr said. “Our focus is on our partners for now.”
Following our interview, we reached out to Google and a PR representative confirmed that the company would not be releasing a watch of its own this year.
It’s rather odd to hear Google confirm this suspicion. Not only does the company usually wait until it hosts a big event to unveil everything it’s doing and not doing, but a pretty sizeable amount of rumors from reliable and trustworthy sources hinted that Google would be releasing some type of Pixel Watch this year. Some reports even detailed the watch as having a Snapdragon 3100 chipset, Bluetooth with aptX support, GPS, LTE connectivity, and more.
Now, of course, you can always just not trust Google in this case and assume there is a Pixel Watch coming this year what with all the leaks and rumors floating around. (Quite frankly, I’m not sure if it would really shock anyone if the company was just trolling us in this report.) But at least for the time being, you can pretty much kiss the watch goodbye.
