Google’s been trying to enter the retail space for years it seems, and now, it looks like the company might just do it. According to a report out of The Chicago Tribune, the search giant is currently in the process of finalizing a lease that will see the company acquire a 14,000-square-foot retail location in Chicago’s Fulton Market. This would be a permanent retail store and not one of Google’s many pop-ups its held over the years.
The Tribune describes the space a bit more in detail below.
Google’s lease will include former spaces of longtime area restaurants Jaipur and Perez. Behind the connected buildings, an alley forms a pedestrian walkway between Peoria and Green streets. The property is directly across the street from the Nobu Hotel that is under construction.
Right now, it’s unclear exactly what Google will do with the space since the company isn’t commenting on today’s report, but we do expect to see the many products that come with the Google logo stamped on such as the Pixel, Google Home, and Chromecast all on display. This would be similar to the pop-up shops the company opens that did the same thing.
Considering we don’t have any concrete proof that Google is opening its first retail outlet in Chicago, all we have to judge this rumor is the Tribune‘s report. Therefore, we’ll have to ride this one out to see what happens instead of try to predict it.
