As many of you have heard over the past couple of days, Google released one of their highly anticipated apps of the summer called Duo (the other is called Allo, a messaging app with a bunch of different features built inside), a very simple, straightforward video calling application that ties in with your phone number and works on iOS and Android. However, unlike FaceTime on iOS, you can’t make audio only calls as at the moment, only video is supported. But according to a recent comment by Google’s product lead for communication Amit Fulay, it looks like this feature will be coming eventually.
As you can see in the screenshot of the comment I mentioned, Fulay answers Google+ user Rudra Rugge‘s question about audio only calls on Google Duo simply by saying “coming soon”. You have to remember that this is Google we’re dealing with here after all, so “soon” could mean next week, next month, or even next year. But nonetheless, it’s nice to know the feature is on its way.
But why would you download a video calling app just to make audio calls for free? Well, for starters you may not have strong enough Wi-Fi or your data speeds may not be the fastest to carry over video feeds properly, or you just don’t wanna be seen on camera. Plus, you may not have a front facing camera if you bought a cheap Android phone so this way you can use the app regardless. I’m sure other users will think of different reasons for wanting to have audio calls on Duo, so I’ll leave the rest up to you.
Will you use audio calls inside Google Duo when/if it launches?
