To celebrate the browser’s tenth anniversary, Google has announced a major upgrade for Chrome that includes a new design and features. It’s the first time we’ve ever seen such a major upgrade for the browser in terms of raw visual design.
According to Google, Chrome will now feature a design that’s more in line with the company’s Material Design language we’ve seen with other Google-branded products like Android. The browser will now feature rounded corners virtually everywhere, cleaner animations, and a much more modern aesthetic. These design tweaks extend to both desktop and Android, while iOS is getting a complete redesign with a new bottom navigation bar and tab preview page. Of course, it also gets the more Material Design-esque look.
Google is also adding new features to Chrome. For instance, there’s a new password manager that will automatically generate passwords for new accounts you create and let you save them for easier and more secure log-ins. Chrome will also now aim to be more accurate when it comes to autofill for things like passwords, credit card numbers, and more.
You know the shortcuts that pop up on the New Tab page in Chrome? Now, you can customize them to access whatever webpage you want. Before, they used to generate based on your search history. But now, you’ll have full control over what pops up and what doesn’t.
Finally, Google’s improving the search experience within Chrome with the new Omnibox. With Omnibox, you’ll be able to access information based on your queries right in the search field to help save time. And, if you already have a tab open with a specific website loaded and you try searching for it in a new tab, Chrome will let you know the page is already open and let you jump right into the existing tab. This will be especially useful for those of you who have hundreds of tabs open at once across multiple windows. You know who you are. 😉
According to Google, Chrome 69 is beginning to roll out to all users of the app now.
