In a new interview with The Wall Street Journal, Apple chief of design Jony Ive stated that while designing the company’s EarPods, he got inspiration from J. J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awaken‘s Stormtroopers. To quote the interview, he had the “look of the original Stormtroopers in mind when he designed Apple’s earbuds.”
Interestingly, Michael Kaplan, costume designer for The Force Awakens, got inspiration from Apple while designing the Stormtroopers for the latest Star Wars 7, as he stated in an interview with Vanity Fair back in 2015. “With the Stormtroopers it was more of a simplification, almost like, ‘What would Apple do?’”
So basically, some serious off-the-walls design inception has taken place between Star Wars and Apple. Next time you look at your EarPods, just imagine Ive looking at them and saying, “Hey, these look like that Stormtrooper thingy I’m responsible for.”
But say it with a British accent. It’s funnier that way.
