Corning’s New Gorilla Glass 6 is Twice as Durable

Corning has unveiled another new generation of Gorilla Glass: Gorilla Glass 6. The new material aims to further safeguard your smartphone from accidental drops and bumps that can lead to scratches and cracks. While the new version doesn’t break any new ground, it at least improves things where it counts.

For instance, Corning now says with Gorilla Glass 6, you can drop your phone up to 15 times and it won’t crack. It also has a higher chance of surviving falls from higher heights. To put this into perspective, Corning says the new Gorilla Glass is twice as strong as Gorilla Glass 5.

“As consumers become more dependent on their smartphones, the opportunity for potentially damaging drops is also on the rise. Now more than ever, it’s critical the cover glass provides outstanding protection,” said John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning Gorilla Glass. “Corning Gorilla Glass 6 improves upon Gorilla Glass 5 by surviving drops from higher heights, but, more importantly, has been engineered to survive multiple drops.”

That being said, things aren’t so great in the scratch department. While Gorilla Glass 5 doesn’t exactly scratch easy, Gorilla Glass 6 includes the same level of scratch protection which is a bit unfortunate. Personally, I would’ve liked to see some type of process implemented to achieve better scratch protection, but at least my phone is now less likely to crack.

Corning says Gorilla Glass 6 is now available for phone manufacturers to implement. It’ll start shipping in consumer products over the coming months.
