When Apple’s about to announce new products, one source who tends to be pretty accurate with predictions is Bloomberg. Leading up to an event, reporter Mark Gurman usually puts out an article that’s more or less what you can expect from the trillion-dollar company in the near future. Now, Gurman is out with a new article at Bloomberg which details the next lineup of iPhones for those of you who haven’t be following along.
In the report, Bloomberg says Apple plans to release three new iPhones this year: one with a 5.8-inch OLED display, one with a 6.1-inch LCD display, and one with a 6.5-inch OLED display. The 6.1-inch LCD model will come in a variety of new colors besides the usual black and silver finishes. It’ll also likely come with aluminum edges, a direct departure from the current iPhone X’s stainless steel rails. Teh back glass of the device will not likely match the color of the aluminum sides to simplify production.
As for the new 5.8-inch model, Apple will reportedly focus on processor performance and camera improvements for the successor to the iPhone X. Meanwhile, the 6.5-inch OLED variant will ship with even more improvements, especially in regard to software which, according to Bloomberg, will allow for two apps to run at the same time in split-screen mode. Hardware-wise, both the 6.5-inch and 5.8-inch models will have glass backs and stainless steel sides.
As far as similarities between the three iPhones go, each device will come with a gesture-based navigation system similar to the iPhone X’s and come with Face ID support. Bloomberg says one or two of the devices will also come with dual SIM slots in select markets. Pricing isn’t noted in the article, but based on previous rumors, we can expect the lineup to start at around $700 or so and go up to around $1,200.
One of the biggest mysteries in the iPhone world as of late has been the naming scheme Apple will follow with its upcoming smartphones. We haven’t really heard any rumors in this regard, but Bloomberg‘s report does aim to shed some light upon the situation.
According to the report, Apple has been struggling to come up with a name for its newest devices, with some people within the company referring to them as S models since the company is focusing on incremental improvements instead of major overhauls. Therefore, there’s a possibility the OLED variants could be called the “iPhone Xs” and “iPhone Xs Plus.” However, Apple is also considering getting rid of the Plus branding. Plus, we still have no idea what the 6.1-inch LCD phone could be called. So in a nutshell, we still don’t really know what Apple’s going to call these new devices, and since August is winding down, the company is seriously running out of time to figure out its branding.
Finally, to round off the report, Bloomberg says Apple will also introduce new Apple Watches at its iPhone event next month with bigger screens in the same footprints as the existing Apple Watch Series 3 models. This means all of your existing bands you’ve collected over the years will still fit. In addition, new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros will also arrive before the end of the year with Face ID, gesture-based navigation, and slim bezels. Unfortunately, for some, there won’t be an upgraded iPad mini any time soon.
