Apple is following modern Android customs this year by including three rear cameras on its new iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. For some reason, though, the company also thinks it’s necessary to include the same camera array on its other “Pro” mobile device, the iPad, as reported by a few different sources throughout 2019.
Today’s report (via Sonny Dickson) is actually a leak which claims to show off a “final design mockup” of the new iPad Pro. We only get a look at the back of the device, but that’s all we need to tell that the new tablet will fall in line with the iPhone Pro series by including three rear cameras in the upper left-hand corner, complete with a square camera bump.
Notably missing is a glass layer on top of the camera housing. There’s a good chance it isn’t included in this mockup since it isn’t an actual tablet – it’s just the housing of the iPad itself. “Why include an unnecessary component when you can just omit it?” said Apple. Probably.
I’m still baffled by the idea of three rear cameras on an iPad. I know you’ll be able to shoot videos, take photos, and edit them all on one device, but taking photos on an iPad has never been a discrete or convenient experience. I guess if you’re gonna go out of your way to shoot stuff with an iPad, you’re not aiming for “convenient” or an “on-the-low” profile, anyhow.
With leaks like these, there’s a good chance we’ll see the new iPad Pro and any other computer-centric products from Apple next month in another event. Stay tuned.
