Today via a press release, Apple announced an updated version of the MacBook Pro with much faster performance. For the first time in a Mac laptop, the company is including eight-core processors in the form of Intel’s 8th- and 9th-generation Chore chipsets. The company says the new processors deliver two times faster performance over a quad-core MacBook Pro and 40 percent better performance than a six-core MacBook Pro.
Here’s a breakdown of what’s available. The 13-inch Touch Bar-enabled MacBook Pro is getting a base 8th-gen quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, while the top-end is getting a new 8th-gen quad-core i7. Meanwhile, the 15-inch MacBook Pro gets either a 9th-gen six-core i7, an eight-core i9, or a special edition eight-core i9 with boosted speeds of up to 5.0GHz. If you want the fastest speeds possible, you’ll have to buy the 15-inch model.
Other than the processor bumps, everything else is staying the same. Apple is sticking with the same GPUs, RAM options, and overall design with the latest MacBook Pros. It did tweak the keyboard to try and make it more durable, but considering the company has done so in the past and failed, it’s hard to say whether this is an actual improvement or not.
Apple says the new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pros will start at $1,799 and $2,399, respectively. They’re both available starting today through Apple.com and select Apple Stores.
