In an admittedly shocking announcement today, Amazon has confirmed Apple is bringing support for its Apple Music streaming service to Echo devices. The service has been exclusive to Apple HomePod which, up until this point, has been the only smart speaker that gave you access to your Apple Music library. Now, users will be able to play their Apple Music content through Amazon’s popular smart home gadgets.
“Music is one of the most popular features on Alexa—since we launched Alexa four years ago, customers are listening to more music in their homes than ever before,” said Dave Limp, senior VP in Amazon’s devices department. “We are committed to offering great music providers to our customers and since launching the Music Skill API to developers just last month, we’ve expanded the music selection on Alexa to include even more top-tier services. We’re thrilled to bring Apple Music – one of the most popular music services in the US – to Echo customers this holiday.”
According to Amazon’s blog post, Apple Music will be available to customers as a Skill which you can enable for your Echo device. Once enabled, just sign in with your Apple ID credentials and say, “Alexa, ask Apple Music to play [insert favorite song, album, playlist, or radio station here].” You’ll even be able to listen to Beats 1 if you want.
The Apple Music Skill will be available starting December 17th.
