I couldn’t tell you the number of rumors surrounding a potential successor to 2016’s iPhone SE. There are literally too many to count. And although the rumors first emerged in early 2018, they haven’t slowed down just yet, and a new report claims to shed light on a potential release timeframe for the device.
According to Nikkei, Apple will be launching an iPhone SE 2 sometime in the spring of 2020. The report notes the device will take on the mid-range phone market yet again, this time with hopes to compete with the likes of Huawei, Samsung, and Xiaomi in international markets where Apple is losing in the lower-end segment.
Apparently, the new SE will resemble the 4.7-inch iPhone 8 from 2017, at least to an extent. It’ll come with an LCD display, the same processor and internals as this year’s upcoming iPhones, and offer a single rear camera with 128GB of storage. The previous SE was priced at $399, so I’d imagine this phone will cost something similar.
There are plenty of people out there who simply want a smaller iPhone. Since 2017, the iPhone has gotten bigger and bigger, with the smallest screen you can get on a flagship iPhone being 5.8-inches. If Apple releases another 4.7-inch phone with similar internals to its $1,000+ counterparts, I can imagine it selling pretty well. The original SE did, after all.
Still, though, we have yet to see the 2019 iPhones officially, and Nikkei‘s report is among the first that claim a new SE is arriving in 2020. So before placing any bets, I’d let this rumor mill spin a bit more for at least three or four months.
