Apple will reveal iOS 13 at this year’s World Wide Developers Conference in June. Before then, there’s plenty of time for rumors and speculation to make headlines around the web. Today, a new report out of 9to5Mac is doing just that.
According to 9to5Mac who quotes “people familiar with the development of the operating system,” Apple will be introducing a ton of new features with iOS 13. Right off the bat, the company is expected to finally launch a dark mode for iPhones and iPads that will darken the user interface and make it more appealing to use it in low-light conditions. It should be similar to what’s already available with macOS.
With iOS 13, the iPad will get some welcome improvements. 9to5Mac says the tablet will gain the ability for apps to have multiple windows open at once using a new “sheets” feature. It sounds a bit hard to comprehend, but the general idea is to allow users to have a few instances of an app open by using floating windows that can be dragged around the screen. The windows (or “cards”) can be stacked on top of each other when not in use.
Apple may also finally fix the volume indicator on iOS. Right now, it’s this big, intrusive Ui element that takes up a good chunk of your screen and blocks whatever you’re doing from view. With iOS 13, Apple will be fixing it, although 9to5Mac doesn’t mention how.
There are also plenty of other smaller improvements such as enhancements to Safari, Mail, and font management. Apple will be replacing the shake-to-undo gesture to a three-finger swipe, and improved multiple item selection will hopefully make multitasking on small and large screens alike more enjoyable.
We’re still a couple of months away from seeing iOS 13 officially, but with this amount of features already being made known by reliable sources such as 9to5Mac, it’s only a matter of time until we know more about the future of Apple’s phone and tablet operating system.
