Apple’s been known to create some great products like the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and more. They’re stretched their strengths into various fields across the board, but it now looks like they wanna dip their toes in the world of publishing. Hence, via a press release, Apple today announced a new photo book with various pictures of (you guessed it!) Apple products that have made their way to the public in the past two decades.
Apple today announced the release of a new hardbound book chronicling 20 years of Apple’s design, expressed through 450 photographs of past and current Apple products. “Designed by Apple in California,” which covers products from 1998’s iMac to 2015’s Apple Pencil, also documents the materials and techniques used by Apple’s design team over two decades of innovation.
The book, simply but practically called “Designed by Apple in California,” features images taken by Andrew Zuckerman in “a deliberately spare style.” There’s over 450 images to gander at, with some featuring finished Apple products and some taking you inside the devices you use every day. Apple says this book is a tribute to the great Steve Jobs. Sure, this is probably something not many will buy, but it could make a great addition to your coffee table.
That is, if you can spend the money…
If you’d like the book in small (10.20” x 12.75”), Apple’s gonna run you $199. That’s right, folks. Your eyes don’t deceive you. Then, if you want the book in large (13” x 16.25”), it’s gonna cost $299.
Let that settle in for a minute. It’s gonna cost you a minimum of $200 to get a book with a bunch of Apple products in it. Rather printing out 450 pages of iPhone pictures yourself, you can pay Apple $200 to do it for you.
Hey, I guess it may be worth it when you hear about the kind of paper they’re using. As per a quote from Apple directly,
“Designed by Apple in California” is available in two sizes and printed on specially milled, custom-dyed paper with gilded matte silver edges, using eight color separations and low-ghost ink.
I bet it’s worth it now, right?
Anyway, if some of you are crazy enough to spend your likely hard-earned money on this book, you’ll be able to pick it up from Apple.com starting tomorrow, while a variety of Apple stores will also be selling the book and have it on display for your viewing pleasure. For more information and to read some quotes from Jony Ive (because who doesn’t like reading quotes from him?), read the full press release below.
“Designed by Apple in California” chronicles 20 years of Apple design
New Photo Book Tells the Story of Design at Apple
Cupertino, California — Apple today announced the release of a new hardbound book chronicling 20 years of Apple’s design, expressed through 450 photographs of past and current Apple products. “Designed by Apple in California,” which covers products from 1998’s iMac to 2015’s Apple Pencil, also documents the materials and techniques used by Apple’s design team over two decades of innovation.
The book is dedicated to the memory of Steve Jobs.“The idea of genuinely trying to make something great for humanity was Steve’s motivation from the beginning, and it remains both our ideal and our goal as Apple looks to the future,” said Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer. “This archive is intended to be a gentle gathering of many of the products the team has designed over the years. We hope it brings some understanding to how and why they exist, while serving as a resource for students of all design disciplines.”
The products in this book are the result of a profoundly close collaboration between many different groups. Shot by photographer Andrew Zuckerman in a deliberately spare style, the book’s 450 images illustrate Apple’s design process as well as its finished products.
In the book’s foreword, Ive explains:
While this is a design book, it is not about the design team, the creative process or product development. It is an objective representation of our work that, ironically, describes who we are. It describes how we work, our values, our preoccupations and our goals. We have always hoped to be defined by what we do rather than by what we say.
We strive, with varying degrees of success, to define objects that appear effortless. Objects that appear so simple, coherent and inevitable that there could be no rational alternative.
“Designed by Apple in California” is available in two sizes and printed on specially milled, custom-dyed paper with gilded matte silver edges, using eight color separations and low-ghost ink. This linen-bound, hardcover volume was developed over an eight-year period. It is published by Apple.
