Back in February, we first reported that Siri would be coming to the Mac this June at WWDC as a part of OS X 10.12. Now, Mac Rumors has released a report with what claims to be the icons that will be used to activate the personal assistant on Apple’s line of computers:
According to our original report, Siri would appear not on the entire screen like on iOS but in a little dialog box based in the menu bar of OS X. After all, this would make a lot of sense since something like Spotlight doesn’t even take up the entire screen.
Instead of integrating Siri as a swipe menu akin to the Mac’s Notification Center or as a full screen view like on the iPhone and even the iPad Pro, Siri for the Mac will live in the Mac’s Menu Bar. Similar to the Spotlight magnifying glass icon for search and notifications icon for Notification Center, a Siri icon in the top right corner of the menu bar will activate the voice control feature.
A second way of activating Siri would be by clicking an icon in the Dock much like launching Launchpad or Mission Control. This icon would be movable and removable if the user doesn’t want/need another way of activating the assistant.
In the menu bar, there’s a simple Siri black and white icon that features the word “Siri” surrounded by a box, while the full dock icon is more colorful and features a colorful Siri waveform in the style of other built-in app icons. Clicking on either of the icons brings up a Siri waveform to give users a visual cue that the virtual assistant is listening for commands, much like on iOS devices when the Home button is held down.
The third and final way of activating Siri on the Mac is, according to Mac Rumors, by saying, “Hey, Siri”. This feature would by default be turned off, however could be accessed through a dedicated pane in the System Preferences app.
In addition to accessing Siri through these two buttons, a hands-free “Hey Siri” activation command is also supported. “Hey Siri” is an option that’s disabled by default at the current time, but it can be turned on in the Preferences menu.
Tweaks may be performed on these icons before the initial demonstration of Siri on the Mac alongside before OS X 10.12 even launches. Beta periods normally follow WWDC which will show the evolution of upcoming OSes Apple is working to finalize for public release, so we may see changes made to both Siri and it’s icons before the official launch of the OS X update. Siri could also be pulled from OS X 10.12 all together as well if it’s not up to Apple’s standards yet.
WWDC will take place June 13-17 with an opening keynote scheduled for the 13th. This is where we’ll see OS X 10.12 in action alongside iOS 10, watchOS 3, and tvOS 10.
