Another report has been released by 9to5Mac, and this one regards the upcoming iPhone 5se. Or should I say iPhone “SE”…
The report states that Apple has ultimately decided to name their upcoming 4-inch handset the iPhone SE, not the 5se. Of course, SE will still likely stand for an “enhanced”, “special edition” of the iPhone 5s, it just won’t explicitly say that in the name. This will also mark the first iPhone without a number in it’s name.
In January, we reported that Apple is preparing a new 4-inch iPhone that is essentially 2013’s iPhone 5s with upgraded internals. At the time, we heard that Apple would call the device the “iPhone 5se” based on it being both an enhanced and “special edition” version of the iPhone 5s. Now, we are hearing that Apple appears to be going all in on the special edition factor: sources say that Apple has decided to drop the “5” from the device’s name and simply call it the “iPhone SE.” This will mark the first iPhone upgrade without a number in its name and would logically remove it from a yearly update cycle.
Bringing back the iPhone “5” series with this new 4-inch phone in the midst of the iPhone “6” lifecycle would certainly cause some confusion amongst customers and the public in general, so simply naming the upcoming handset the iPhone “SE” would not only make Apple’s current phone lineup simpler, but cleaner also. I mean, if they went with the 5se as the phone’s name, they’d have the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPhone 5se. They’d have two full generations of iPhones along with a revised version of a 3 year old iPhone that is on par with an iPhone 6s but isn’t even quite a 6. With a simple name as iPhone “SE”, Apple will certainly be making a quite necessary move. However, if they were to totally axe the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the first half of 2016’s iPhone lineup would make a lot of sense. It’d go iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, and SE. They all have A9 processors, they all support Live Photos, they all support Apple Pay, but the SE is specced a little lower with a smaller screen, an 8MP camera, and no 3D Touch. On my part, it just makes sense, and I think this could be something Apple could do and that the public should look out for this decision to be made in the coming weeks.
So what’s in store for the iPhone “SE”? Well, it’s highly rumored to feature a 4-inch screen, an A9 processor (like the one found in the iPhone 6s), Touch ID, an upgraded 8MP camera with support for Live Photos (however no 3D Touch), Apple Pay, and slightly-curved edges like the iPhone 6 family. It’s also rumored to become available in 16 and 64GB storage capacities along with come in Space Gray, Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold. In fact, 9to5Mac recently reportedly obtained drawings of the upcoming 4-inch iPhone from a case manufacturer that could give us a better picture at what exactly the dimensions the iPhone “SE” will feature, and it looks like Apple decided to move the power button from the top of the phone to the right hand side. As it looks, the iPhone “SE”‘s body will be nearly identical to the 5s, of course with changes made like the repositioned power button. But even though that may be true, we can expect a simply upgraded iPhone 5s with a new name, a new color option (Rose Gold), and new storage capacities (16, 64GB).
