Report: 9.7-inch iPad Pro to Have 12MP Camera, 4K Video Support

Right now, we’re really close to seeing the unveiling of the iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro, and now 9to5Mac has released another report stating that the next addition to the iPad family will feature a 12MP camera with full 4K video support, something the rumored 4-inch iPhone could have as well. Internal prototypes of the smaller Pro edition tablet reportedly have such a sensor on the back according to the popular news site’s sources. The camera being used supposedly can be comparable to the iPhone 6s’ sensor.

While Apple’s upcoming 9.7-inch iPad Pro will mostly match the 12.9-inch version in terms of functionality, there likely will be one key difference. Internal prototypes of the smaller model include a 12 megapixel rear camera comparable to the sensor in the iPhone 6s, according to sources. The 12.9-inch model that shipped this past November has an eight megapixel rear camera.

Since the 9.7-inch iPad form factor is much more portable when compared to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro form factor, it makes sense for Apple to build in a better camera than the Pro’s 8MP camera into the smaller variant as photographers (and pretty much everyone) will find it much easier and convenient (not to mention less embarrassing) to shoot photos and videos with the more compact build.

With the addition of a 12MP camera, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro will reportedly be able to shoot 4K video. It’s unclear at this time just what capabilities the camera will have, like what different frame rates you’ll be able to shoot at or if you’ll have continuus auto-focus or not. However, even though we can expect a new rear camera, the same FaceTime HD front camera found on many of Apple’s past iPads will be present. For comparison, the iPad Air 2, 2014’s model, has an 8MP rear camera and a FaceTime HD front camera.

Given that the smaller display yields a more portable form-factor, it would make sense for Apple to promote improved photography on its 9.7-inch tablet. The 9.7-inch iPad Pro’s predecessor, the iPad Air 2, includes an eight megapixel rear camera. Like all recent iPad models, the new version will include a FaceTime HD camera on the front above the display. Like the 6s, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro would also record 4K video.

Other rumored features of the 9.7-inch iPad Pro include the same A9X processor found in the 12.9-inch Pro alongside screen technology that supports the Apple Pencil, quad speakers, and a Smart Connector. It’s also suggested that the screen on the new Pro model with feature brightness and anti-glare improvements when compared to the iPad Air 2.
