Last month, Android Police leaked a screenshot on their site of the supposed Settings app in the upcoming Android N operating system. The image seemed to display a hamburger menu button on the top bar of the Settings application which would allow a user to switch between different options quicker and more efficiently. Now, the highly respected news site is back with another render, and this one seems to show off that very menu found in Settings along with the new UI users will supposedly find in the next update for Android.
First up is the new Settings app UI, which is slightly different than Android Marshmallow’s but still is just as familiar. This render seems to suggest that Google will place the “Do not disturb” functions right at the top of the app for ease of access, which is interesting as it’s unclear whether they’ll also remain in the quick settings panel as they are in Marshmallow. The options are also spaced out a little more than they are in Marshmallow and aren’t as compact. In addition, Google seems to ditch the card look in the app as well in favor of a simpler, flatter appearance. Also, note that the hamburger menu button doesn’t appear on the main page of Settings.
Next up, the main course: the hamburger menu. Android Police decided to render Developer options in Android N to show off the new way of navigating different options, and the way the menu looks is incredible. As you can see above, a simple slide in from the left will bring up the menu along with a simple tap of the hamburger button at the top left of the left screenshot. You can select any option that’s available on the main Settings page as well as access that particular page right from the menu, which will make navigating Settings a lot more pleasing, convenient, and speedy. Of course, there’s no guarantee that the menu will look like this or if it will even make it into Android N, but hopefully it does, because it looks gangster.
I’m excited about Android N. With all the redesigns and new features rumored to be showcased in the next version of the OS, it’s really getting me anxious to try it out. And I don’t have to wait too much longer, as Google I/O 2016, which is set to be the stage where the unveiling of Android N will take place, is this May on the 18th through the 20th.
