Twitter Rebrands Themselves as a “News” App, Not a “Social Network”

Twitter has always been a rival to social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, however that’s not how the company sees themselves. According to multiple surfaced reports, the former “social network” has entered a new category on the App Store, and that’s “News.”

The New York Times, BBC, The Wall Street Journal, and CNN are now all target Twitter looks like they’re targeting to compete against. This actually makes sense, however may not to you.

You see, back when Twitter launched in 2006, their main goal was to become a place where people could get the latest news no matter where they lived. However, as more and more users began signing up for the service and began tweeting out more personal things, the platform quickly became a social network like Facebook rather a news source. And now, it looks like Twitter wants to get back to their roots, and I don’t blame them. I mainly use the platform to promote MBEDDED and receive the latest news from such places as CNN, NBC, WSJ, and the NYT. And there’s nothing wrong with that, because this platform is very good at operating in this fashion. Why? Because that’s why Twitter exists. Other indications Twitter has been wanting to change directions category wise was when the company acquired rights to stream Thursday Night NFL games right on their platform. However, it was unclear at that time that a change of this nature would be coming, as it was looked at as something to compete with Facebook with.
