Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Active is Official

Coming as a surprise for some (including myself), Samsung and AT&T have officially unveiled the Galaxy S7 Active, a more rugged version of the former’s 2016 flagship. This smartphone features all the specs of the original Galaxy S7, however encloses those internals with a new, accident-proof build.

For starters, this new design is drop proof, so if you drop your GS7 Active, it won’t shatter. Plus, the screen is drop proof as well. The whole device is also completely water proof thanks to an IP68 certified rating. There’s also an MIL STD 810G rating which means this smartphone is totally dirt and temperature proof, so if you leave your phone in 100 degree sand at the beach this summer, you’ll be fine.

The famous “Active Key” is back in the GS7 Active which can be programmed to activate any app of your choosing based on tap and hold patterns. There’s also three buttons on the front of the device which are used for recent apps, back navigation, and home. The home button doubles as a fingerprint sensor, something that’s a first for any Galaxy S Active.

There’s also a huge 4,000mAh battery which is bigger than the standard Galaxy S7’s 3,000mAh battery and the S7 Edge’s 3,600mAh cell. In fact, this is the biggest battery ever built into a Galaxy S smartphone.

An FM tuner is also built into the GS7 Active.

Other than those differences, there’s nothing really changed between the Galaxy S7 and S7 Active. The same Snapdragon 820, 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display, 4GB of RAM, microSD card slot, and standard 32GB of storage are all brought over, however that’s not really a bad thing since this is one of the most powerful phones on the planet right now.

June 10 is the day when the GS7 Active will launch exclusively on AT&T in Sandy Gold, Camo Green, and Titanium Gray. If you sign up for AT&T’s Next plan, you’ll pay $26.50 for the smartphone, while $33.13 is the cost per month on the Next Every Year plan. There’s plenty of perks if you pick up this device. Here’s a list of them:

  • Get the Samsung Gear S2, the first smartwatch with NumberSync7, for free8 with a new two year wireless agreement and purchase of a Galaxy S7 active on AT&T Next, and qualified wireless service on both devices. With NumberSync you can send and receive texts, as well as make and receive calls, from your Gear S2 using the same mobile number as your Galaxy S7 active.
  • Buy two Galaxy S7 active smartphones on AT&T Next and get up to $695 in bill credits over 30 months.
  • Get the Samsung Galaxy Tab E for $0.99 on a 2-year agreement when you buy the Galaxy S7 active. Take advantage of the offer for the latest Samsung tablet when you buy the Galaxy S7 active on AT&T NextSM and activate wireless service on both devices.
  • Business customers who activate or upgrade 20 or more lines on any qualified Samsung device can receive 12 months credit for MobileIron Cloud® and a one-time $1,000 Professional Service Credit (available to new and qualified MobileIron customers).

Unlocked variants of the GS7 Active will also be sold, however it’s unclear just how much they’ll cost as of now.
