Jake Gyllenhaal Will Play Mysterio in Next Spider-Man Film

According to a new report out of The Hollywood Reporter, Jake Gyllenhaal, who recently starred in movies such as Life and Stronger, is currently in talks to play the villain role in the upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. In the report, it’s noted Gyllenhaal will play the role of Mysterio, a classic Spidey villain who first appeared in the comics back in 1964. While talks aren’t finalized yet, it’s pretty safe to say this report is probably accurate.

A Mysterio appearance in a Spider-Man film has been a long time coming. Before it was canceled, Sam Rami’s Spider-Man 4 was set to feature the villain, although it was unclear who would portray him at the time. Now, it looks like the character will make his big screen debut as a part of the MCU.

Besides the villain, the only other thing we can say about the next Spider-Man film with confidence is who will play the web-slinger himself: Tom Holland. Other than that, we really don’t know anything else (not even the name). Of course, as we draw closer to the film’s July 5, 2019 release date, we’ll surely learn everything we need to know going into the Homecoming sequel.
