Xiaomi Unveils Mi 9 Flagship with Triple Cameras and 20W Wireless Charging

Xiaomi has taken the wraps off its newest flagship smartphone, the Mi 9. Succeeding last year’s Mi 8, this year’s device gets an updated design along with all the 2019 specs you can handle.

For starters, the Mi 9 now comes with a super-reflective finish on the back of each color option. Xiaomi implemented this so no matter how you look at it, the color begins to shift. It’s available in blue, violet, and black. There’s also a special transparent model that looks like you can see right through the phone. However, in reality, it’s just a mock-up of what the internals might look like. Still looks cool, though.

While on the topic of design, it’s worth mentioning Xiaomi opted for curved glass on the back, the first time the company has ever done so. This should create a better feel in the hand when using it day-to-day.

On the front, Xiaomi includes a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2340×1080. Xiaomi says it’s the same screen they use with the Mi Mix 3. However, instead of a slider mechanism on the back to present the front-facing camera, the company opts for a simple notch at the top of the screen which is totally fine.

As for specs, there are plenty of nice ones on board. The Mi 9 is one of the first phones to include the Snapdragon 855 processor, but that won’t last long since Samsung will unveil a suite of phones today with the chipset. The device also packs 6 or 12GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage, a 3,300mAh battery, Bluetooth 5.0, an in-display fingerprint reader, and a USB-C port. No headphone jack, though.

On the back, Xiaomi includes three cameras. The main sensor weighs in at 48MP with an f/1.8 aperture, the ultra-wide sensor has 16MP and an f/2.2 aperture, and the telephoto shooter has 12MP and an f/2.2 aperture. With this setup, you can take improved portrait mode photos, better micro photographs, and squeeze more into a frame thanks to the wider-angle option. There’s also a 20MP selfie camera on the front.

A particularly cool feature of the Mi 9 is something called “Charge Turbo.” Essentially, this lets users place the Mi 9 on a compatible wireless charging pad and charge their device using 20W speeds. That’s one of the fastest rates we’ve seen on any device that supports wireless charging. In addition, plugging in a USB-C cable can achieve up to 27W charging speeds.

As some final tidbits, the Mi 9 includes Android Pie with MIUI on top, Adreno 640 graphics, and daul SIM card slots.

According to Xiaomi, the Mi 9 will go on sale in China first. No launch was given at press time, but we do know it’ll start at 2,999 yuan (around $450) for 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The higher-end 12GB/256GB variant will run for 3,999 yuan (around $600). There will also be a lower-end variant with a Snapdragon 712 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage for 1,999 (around $300). We expect to learn more about the device’s launch details in the future.
